The Governor of Ituri, Lieutenant-General Johnny Luboya N’kashama, has affirmed his determination to put an end to the impunity of the armed groups that operate in his territory. During the visit of the ICC prosecutor, Karim Khan, to Ituri, the governor issued an ultimatum to the executioners, threatening them with international legal proceedings if they did not put an end to their exactions on the civilian population.
“The armed group that does not want to stop committing abuses against the population will face national and international justice,” he said.
Johnny Luboya N’kashama also appealed to the armed groups to accept dialogue, stop the violence and adhere to the program of disarmament, demobilization, community recovery and stabilization (P-DDRCS). Otherwise, military operations will be reinforced.
The military governor of Ituri also underlined that the visit of the ICC prosecutor sent a strong message to the executioners, that he hoped that this impunity and this violence should end.
Images were released of the ICC prosecutor’s visit to Ituri as well as military operations against armed groups. This strong message sent to the executioners gives hope for a possible stabilization of the region.
However, the security situation in the DRC remains worrying, as evidenced by the recent terrorist attacks in Beni. The citizens’ movements also denounce the forcing of the government in the electoral process and call for the suspension of the bill on the distribution of seats.
By contrast, the CENI’s efforts have been welcomed by Western embassies, although there are still many concerns about it. The Congolese franc has experienced relative stabilization on the official foreign exchange market, but the informal market remains affected.
The development of entrepreneurship in the DRC was at the heart of the concerns at the Young Congolese Entrepreneurs Fair, a unique opportunity for this sector in the country.
The political and economic situation in the DRC therefore remains unstable, even if it is encouraging to note that certain major players are committed to taking action to improve security and justice.
