The economic and social situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is of growing concern. The Front Commun pour le Congo (FCC), an opposition platform, recently expressed its concern about the deterioration of the situation, which is characterized by the fall of the Congolese franc and the soaring prices of basic necessities, resulting in a decline in the purchasing power of the Congolese.
The FCC also denounced the “chaotic” management of the country, characterized by the rise of tribalism, corruption, and illicit and insolent enrichment. This situation is partly due to the instrumentalization of the judiciary and recurrent violations of the rights of the opposition and civil society.
The violent repression of the peaceful demonstration of May 20 organized by the opposition parties aroused the indignation of the international community and was denounced by all Congolese political actors. The FCC calls on the international community to sanction the sponsors and executors of this violence.
It is important to highlight that the DRC is a landlocked country endowed with enormous natural resources, but it is largely steeped in poverty due to poor governance, insecurity and political instability. Civil society organizations and citizens’ movements are increasing calls to end corruption and impunity in the country.
Efforts have been made to stabilize the currency, but the DRC’s economic situation remains fragile. To solve the many problems facing the country, the international community must support Congolese citizens in their fight for free and fair elections, sustained economic development, peace and security.
