“Signing of a memorandum of understanding between armed groups in Ituri: what next for peace?”

The situation in the DRC is marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding between four armed groups from Ituri. The militiamen have decided to stop all violence against civilians and to facilitate the return of the displaced. These commitments were made in the presence of MONUSCO, territorial administrators and the commander of the 32nd military region. However, these promises must be delivered to change the situation on the ground.

Christophe Munyanderu, activist of the CRDH IRUMU, is delighted with the signing of this agreement but is waiting to see actions on the ground to be convinced of the real will of the militiamen to respect their promises. The provincial deputy Mugisa Byarufu, elected from the territory of Djugu, believes that the militiamen must be forced to lay down their arms.

Major General Peter Chirimwami believes that the solution will only come from the Iturians. He believes that a lasting peace will only be achieved with the active involvement of the population. For their part, the militiamen have declared their readiness to participate in the defense of the homeland, in accordance with the legal texts in the matter.

It remains to be seen whether this agreement will bear fruit. It is important that these armed groups respect their commitments in order to offer a new era to the province of Ituri
