New ONPA officers in the DRC: an ambitious reform for the fisheries and aquaculture sector

The new officers of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Office (ONPA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo were recently received by the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Adrien Bokele Djema. This meeting marks the beginning of a new era for ONPA, which is part of the reforms initiated by President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo.

ONPA’s objective is to boost fish production, modernize and industrialize the fishing sector in the DRC. This vision was carried by the Head of State himself, with the aim of ensuring the food self-sufficiency of the Congolese.

Adrien Bokele Djema, Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, defined the missions of the ONPA, which consist in particular in organizing the supply of inputs, fishing and aquaculture materials and equipment, collecting and distributing products fisheries and aquaculture throughout the country, to set up appropriate infrastructure, to contribute to the processing and preservation of products, to organize marketing and market access, as well as to participate in scientific research in the field of fisheries and aquaculture.

Henriette Wamu, president of the board of directors of the ONPA, underlined the importance of the work which awaits them after taking office. The newly appointed team expresses its gratitude to the Head of State and is committed to working for the well-being of the Congolese, in line with the vision of the President of the Republic.

This appointment of new ONPA officers was made by presidential order, announced on national television on July 8th. This choice bears witness to the DRC’s desire to develop its fisheries and aquaculture sector, in order to promote economic progress and food self-sufficiency.

In conclusion, the appointment of the new leaders of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Office in the DRC marks the beginning of a new dynamic for this crucial sector.
