Latest news, the examination of the prevention of the illegal possession of weapons of war against MP Édouard Mwangachuchu was at the heart of the attention last Friday before the High Military Court. According to the prosecution, the weapon that was given to Mwangachuchu was not a self-defense weapon but rather a weapon of war, the possession of which is conditioned by a presidential order. However, the defendant explained that in his understanding it was not a question of a weapon of war but rather of a weapon of self-defense.
Mwangachuchu’s lawyers say former Interior Minister Richard Muyej is in a better position to explain to the court why he allowed their client to obtain a weapon of war when he had asked for a self-defense weapon . Indeed, Mwangachuchu is suspected of having participated in an insurrectionary movement and of maintaining links with the rebels of the M23, as well as of illegally detaining munitions of war.
This case reveals the complexity of the political and security context in eastern DRC, which has persisted for years now. Armed groups abound there and the region is often the scene of terrorist attacks, to the great displeasure of the local populations who suffer the horrors of this insecurity.
However, it is important to emphasize that despite these difficulties, the country continues to move forward. There is an interesting initiative in Kasai, where more than 52,000 students took Enafep 2023 under the supervision of political and administrative authorities. This approach is commendable and demonstrates a desire on the part of public actors to contribute to the development of national education and therefore of Congolese youth.
It is also worth noting the recent holding of the “Salon des Jeunes Entrepreneurs Congolais”, which allowed young investors to present their projects, or even to find financing for them. An initiative that deserves to be welcomed, knowing that entrepreneurship is one of the levers for the sustainable economic development of the country.
Despite an often worrying security context, it is important not to lose sight of these promising advances and to continue to work together for a better Congo.
