The International Conference for the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) met in extraordinary session to discuss the security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as well as the political situation in Sudan. In this tense context, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairman of the African Union Commission, proposed regional and international solutions to mitigate the catastrophic humanitarian consequences in the eastern part of the DRC. He recalls that the African Union Commission will relentlessly pursue the support of regional efforts in the coordination of initiatives for the stabilization of the Great Lakes.
The Chairman of the African Union Commission called on the United Nations to take action by providing the relevant support and support in financial matters and technical and logistical expertise for the restoration of peace in the DRC. Moussa Faki Mahamat also commended the efforts of regional organizations such as the East African Community, ECCAS and the Southern African Development Community in their commitment to defusing tensions between the DRC and Rwanda.
Moussa Faki Mahamat announced a quadripartite of regional organizations on the question of the DRC. This meeting will bring together the representatives of ECCAS, CIRLG, SADC and the EAC and will make it possible to work on better coordination of regional efforts and a division of labor on the basis of the comparative advantages of each of the regional mechanisms. Some diplomatic and military initiatives have already been put in place to stop the advance of the armed group M23, however, the security situation remains worrying in this sensitive area.
In conclusion, the ICGLR continues to proclaim its “collective determination to make the Great Lakes region an area of lasting peace and security, for States and peoples, of political and social stability, of shared growth and development. , a space of cooperation based on strategies and policies of convergence within the framework of a common destiny”. Thus, the African Union Commission and regional organizations continue to intervene to find lasting and stable solutions for the countries of the Great Lakes region, particularly the DRC.
