In June 2023, the Democratic Republic of Congo was in turmoil. Preparations for the December presidential elections to appoint Félix Tshiseskedi’s successor were in full swing and the political climate was a source of concern. In this context, Moïse Katumbi, declared candidate for the presidency, gave an exclusive interview to Jeune Afrique.
During this interview, the candidate revealed that he had rejected Félix Tshiseskedi’s offer in 2020 to become Prime Minister. Katumbi had refused the offer, but specifies that he does not regret his commitment alongside Tshiseskedi after the latter’s separation from Joseph Kabila in October 2020.
This refusal was revealed when Moïse Katumbi was prevented from going to the Kongo-Central province. He had also witnessed, a few days before, the arrest of one of his important collaborators. Katumbi had also signaled his determination to face Tshiseskedi in a genuine democratic election.
In addition, several articles published on the Fatshimétrie blog, addressed various topics relating to Congolese news in June 2023. Restrictions on access to social networks in the DRC and their threat to democracy, persistent concerns around the electoral process in the DRC or the security in certain provinces of the country have been widely commented on. The citizens’ movements called for the suspension of the draft law on the distribution of seats because they consider that the government is forcing its passage. However, the CENI’s efforts have been welcomed by Western embassies.
Despite these tensions, there have also been positive developments. The Young Congolese Entrepreneurs Fair was a real opportunity for the development of entrepreneurship in the DRC. But economic stabilization is still a long way to go, with the Congolese franc stabilizing in the official foreign exchange market, but the informal market remaining affected.
Finally, the Democratic Republic of Congo must really work on stabilizing its provinces. The terrorist attacks in Beni, in the east of the country, raised fears for national security. The Governor of Ituri has sent a strong message to the armed groups indicating that they will be awaited by national and international justice.
In short, Congolese news remains rich in twists and turns in June 2023, and foreshadows a tense presidential campaign.
