DRC-Belgium cooperation at the center of exchanges between Belgian parliamentarians and the Congolese head of state

A delegation of Belgian parliamentarians, led by Ms. Els Van Hoof, met Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi on Thursday 2 June. At the center of their discussions, the questions of cooperation between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Belgium as well as the worrying aggression of the DRC by Rwanda via the M23. The parliamentarians also reassured the Congolese Head of State on the involvement of the EU in this dossier.

The delegation of Belgian parliamentarians, visiting Kinshasa, had also been received by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), where the president of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Belgian Parliament had assured that “if there is a need at financial or at the level of observation, we are there to assist the ongoing electoral process”. She also underlined the importance of consolidating democracy in the DRC before reassuring about the responsibility of the CENI in the electoral process.

In view of the concerns aroused by certain aspects of the organization of the elections in the DRC, several citizens’ movements have called for the suspension of the bill on the distribution of seats and are sounding the alarm bell on the forcing in progress.
