“Armed aggression in North Kivu: a former president of civil society shot dead in his home”

Armed attack: a former president of civil society killed in Butuhe, North Kivu

Kakule Mbalikiriri Moïse Léonard, former president of civil society in the Butuhe region, was assassinated at his home Thursday evening by armed individuals. They indiscriminately retrieved his leg as his sleep, riddled him with bullets before fleeing in balaclavas. If an investigation is currently underway on this violent act, some evoke a land conflict on a disputed land.

This tragedy once again highlights the growing insecurity in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The authorities must imperatively protect the citizens, intensify efforts to put an end to the impunity of the armed groups present in the region and investigate the motives for this homicide.

The Congolese nation must mobilize more than ever to ensure peace and security in all regions, in order to prevent such tragedies from happening again in the future.
