The power in place in the Democratic Republic of Congo seems to fear the holding of a free and transparent election, as demonstrated by the violent attack against the procession of the declared presidential candidate, Delly Sesanga, in Kananga. According to Sesanga, this assassination attempt reveals the fear and insecurity of the current government in the face of a democratic election.
During a press conference, Delly Sesanga declared having escaped an assassination attempt during this attack. He emphasizes that the act committed was intended not only to harm him, but also to eliminate a political adversary. He believes that such actions demonstrate the decadence of the power in place, which only deserves disgust.
For Delly Sesanga, this attack is a regression for Congolese democracy. He deplores the use of violence as a means of intimidation and stresses that freedom and transparency are essential to ensure fair elections. According to him, the current government seeks to stifle any dissenting voice and to limit the possibility for candidates to carry out a political campaign under fair conditions.
This attack is unfortunately not isolated for Delly Sesanga. He recalls that he has already been the victim of similar incidents in Kananga, where people wearing the colors of the UDPS had stoned his procession. Deputy Sesanga then openly accused Governor John Kabeya of being responsible for the violence.
Delly Sesanga’s political tour, entitled “Reformation of the Congo”, was disrupted by this attack. However, he remains determined to pursue his commitment to a more democratic and transparent Congo. Despite the obstacles and threats, Delly Sesanga continues to defend the values of democracy and advocate for fair and just elections.
This assassination attempt on Delly Sesanga highlights the challenges facing political candidates in the DRC. It also stresses the importance of guaranteeing security and freedom of expression for all political actors during elections. As citizens, it is crucial to support those who dare to speak out and fight for democratic ideals, in order to build a better future for all Congolese
