Geopolitical tensions and absence of the Secretary General: The Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa marred by controversy

The IX Games of La Francophonie, which are taking place in Kinshasa, have been the subject of a surprising announcement: the Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), Louise Mushikiwabo, will not be present during this competition. which began on July 28 and will continue until August 6. This absence is due to the fact that the Congolese government did not officially invite the Rwandan delegation, due to the security crisis between the two countries.

In addition to the absence of Louise Mushikiwabo, the Rwandan government has also decided not to send its athletes and musical artists. This situation reflects the political and security tensions that exist between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and unfortunately impacts the progress of the games.

Despite the difficulties and successive postponements linked to the pandemic and infrastructure, the organizers finally managed to set up the necessary facilities to accommodate the various sports disciplines. The works were visited by the Head of State, who declared himself satisfied with their progress.

However, this edition of the Games of La Francophonie is tainted by the absence of certain delegations and by the geopolitical tensions which impact the participation of member countries. This context underlines the importance of diplomacy and dialogue within the framework of the Francophonie, which aims to be a space for sharing and celebrating cultural diversity.

Despite these difficulties, the athletes and artists present show determination and talent to provide moments of competition and creativity during these games. We hope that this edition will still be able to carry the colors of the Francophonie high and allow rich cultural exchanges between the participants.

It is important to remember that the Francophonie Games are more than just a sports competition. They are a major event that promotes French-speaking culture around the world and promotes rapprochement between peoples. Let’s hope that the next editions will be able to take place in an atmosphere conducive to the celebration of this beautiful linguistic and cultural diversity
