Political violence continues to rage in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as evidenced recently by the attack on national deputy Delly Sesanga Hipungu in Kananga. This attack aroused the indignation of the opponent Moïse Katumbi Chapwe, who strongly condemned this act of violence.
In a message posted on his Twitter account, Moïse Katumbi expressed his solidarity with Delly Sesanga and denounced this savage and unacceptable aggression. He recalled that despite their political differences, the protagonists should not be seen as enemies, but rather as political adversaries. He stressed that democracy cannot be strengthened by resorting to barbaric methods such as physical violence against opponents.
The leader of Ensemble pour la République also warned against the return of the dictatorship and its harmful consequences for the Congolese population, such as deprivation of liberty, arbitrary arrests, human rights violations and repression of opponents. He insisted that the Congolese yearn for change, freedom and a better life.
Moïse Katumbi concluded his message by calling for love, unity and cohesion, rather than hatred, division and chaos. He stressed that it is everyone’s responsibility to work together to build a better future for the DRC.
It is important to note that Delly Sesanga Hipungu, national deputy and declared presidential candidate of December 2023, was attacked in Kananga during a tour in the Kasaï area. The alleged perpetrators of the attack were young people claiming to be members of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), the presidential party.
This aggression underlines the persistent political tensions in the DRC and the need to promote a climate of dialogue and mutual respect between political actors. Political violence only weakens democracy and compromises the country’s future. It is therefore essential that all stakeholders commit to preserving peace and putting an end to these acts of violence
