Title: Beni, North Kivu: Atrocious violence by alleged ADF fighters in the locality of Museya

At least nine people were killed with machetes and firearms during an attack by suspected ADF fighters in the locality of Museya, in Beni territory, North Kivu. The attack took place on the night of Thursday, June 1, around 11 p.m. The alleged ADF fighters attacked residents in their homes before finishing them off with machetes. Other victims were dragged from their homes to be executed in their fields. The victims are mostly women, with a total of four dead, and the other victims are men.

According to locals, such attacks have unfortunately become common in the Beni region, causing widespread fear among local communities. Bashu civil society reported that this is the umpteenth attack attributed to suspected ADF fighters that has caused casualties in the Beni region.

The frightened inhabitants fled at night to find refuge in the bush. Another person was seriously injured in the attack and was taken to Kyondo Hospital for treatment.

The security situation in the Beni region has become increasingly worrying in recent years, with armed groups on the rise in the area, including the ADF and Mai-Mai groups. These armed groups have been held responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians since 2014 and have created a situation of widespread insecurity in the region.

To end this violence, urgent government intervention is needed to strengthen security and protect vulnerable populations in the Beni region. Local communities need the help of the entire Congolese population to end the violence in the North Kivu region and their country
