Title: “World Day Against Human Trafficking: mobilization to fight against this scourge”

Introduction :

July 29 marks the World Day Against Human Trafficking, an opportunity to raise public awareness and mobilize the international community in the fight against this scourge. This year, the Office of the Head of State, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and USAID, organized a conference on the theme: “Every victim of human trafficking counts, do not let nobody aside”. This day aims to highlight the magnitude of this crime and to encourage collective action to protect the victims and prosecute the perpetrators of these heinous acts.

Human trafficking: a crime against humanity

Human trafficking is a serious crime that affects individuals of all ages, genders and nationalities. According to IOM data, more than 150,000 victims of trafficking were identified between 2002 and 2021, but the number could be even higher in reality. Children are particularly vulnerable, accounting for nearly half of child trafficking cases. In addition, 94% of the victims detected are exploited in their own country, underlining the importance of combating this scourge both nationally and internationally.

Risk factors and consequences of human trafficking

Human trafficking is not limited to geographical borders, it is also fueled by factors such as climate change, natural disasters, crises and armed conflicts. These situations make populations vulnerable and expose many individuals to an increased risk of trafficking. The consequences of human trafficking are disastrous: sexual exploitation, forced marriage, forced labor, enrollment in armed groups, forced begging, child trafficking, etc. These human rights violations violate the dignity and freedom of the victims.

Community Mobilization and Youth Empowerment

The fight against human trafficking requires an all-out mobilization, involving governments, civil society organizations and local communities. It is essential to sensitize the greatest number of people in order to raise awareness of the evils of trafficking and its devastating consequences. With this in mind, the coordinator in charge of Youth, Fight against Violence against Women and Human Trafficking, Chantal Yelu Mulop, underlines the importance of empowering young people, who are increasingly affected by this problem due to factors such as unemployment and poverty.

The action of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and USAID

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and USAID play a vital role in the fight against human trafficking. They work closely with the Congolese authorities to end this crime, protect the victims and prosecute the perpetrators. Despite the significant progress made, much remains to be done to strengthen protective measures, prosecute perpetrators and establish strong partnerships. The determination of these organizations to end trafficking is unwavering.

Conclusion :

The World Day against Human Trafficking represents a major opportunity to raise awareness and mobilize the international community in the fight against this scourge. Human trafficking is a heinous crime that undermines the dignity and freedom of victims. It is essential to continue efforts to protect victims, prosecute perpetrators and build strong partnerships
