The blocking of access to the office of the governor of Kasaï-Oriental continues to be talked about. In a recent development, it was revealed that this measure was ordered by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. This decision comes a week after Governor Patrick-Matthias Kabeya was impeached by the region’s provincial assembly.
Warning signs preceded this situation, in particular the withdrawal of certain agents from the close guard of the governor. In addition, Kabeya Kamwanga’s mission, scheduled for the launch of urban road works, has been cancelled.
The governor’s office is currently inaccessible, with the main door blocked and an increased presence of police forces at the security gate. The duration of this measure remains unknown at this time.
The provincial assembly impeached the governor for contempt of the first provincial institution and embezzlement of public funds. According to article 80 of the organic law, any member of the government impeached must present his resignation within 24 hours. Governor Kabeya, however, has not complied with this provision since his impeachment.
We can therefore see that the situation remains tense in Kasaï-Oriental, with an ongoing political crisis. The decision of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior to block access to the governor’s office shows the firmness of the government in the face of this affair. It now remains to be seen how events will evolve and what the consequences will be for Governor Kabeya
