The 9th Francophonie Games recently kicked off in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, with an impressive opening ceremony at the Martyrs Stadium. Despite the challenges facing the country, such as aggression in the east of the country and financial difficulties, the Congolese government has risen to the challenge of organizing this major event.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and La Francophonie, Christophe Lutundula, delivered a welcome speech during the opening ceremony. He pointed out that the DRC had taken over the organization of these games because of the disengagement of New Brunswick, which should have hosted them initially, and the fact that no other country from the North had applied.
The Games of La Francophonie are an important event to promote French-speaking talent and foster a better understanding of the French-speaking community around the world. After Côte d’Ivoire, the DRC therefore seized the opportunity to host this event and fully financed the necessary infrastructure, thanks to the personal commitment of President Félix Tshisekedi.
VPM Lutundula also underlined the importance of responsible management of infrastructure and its proper use by young people and leaders. He insisted on the fact that these games should be an opportunity for the DRC to show the world its ability to organize major events and promote Francophonie.
