The IX Games of La Francophonie are being held in Kinshasa, and it is regrettable to note that the Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), Louise Mushikiwabo, will not be present at this event. According to Congolese government sources, she was not officially invited, nor were other OIF member states. This absence is linked to the security crisis between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
Besides the absence of Louise Mushikiwabo, the Rwandan government has also decided not to send its athletes and musical artists. It is a decision that reflects the extent of this crisis between the two countries.
Despite successive postponements linked to the pandemic and infrastructure problems, the organizers finally managed to provide the necessary efforts so that the games could take place. The sports infrastructure was ready on time, and the games village was set up at the University of Kinshasa.
The Head of State himself visited the sites and said he was satisfied with the progress of the work. This international sporting event is an opportunity to showcase the capacities and dynamism of Kinshasa, and represents an opportunity to strengthen ties within the Francophonie.
Unfortunately, the absence of the Secretary General of the OIF as well as the Rwandan representatives leaves an atmosphere of diplomatic tension hanging over these games. Let’s hope that despite this, the spirit of competition, exchange and francophone fraternity will prevail and that these games will be a success on all fronts.
It is important to emphasize that the Games of La Francophonie are not limited to a sports competition. They also represent a unique opportunity to highlight the cultural and artistic richness of French-speaking countries. Renowned artists are expected for musical performances, art exhibitions and many other cultural activities. It is therefore an appointment not to be missed for lovers of sport, culture and sharing.
In conclusion, despite diplomatic tensions and notable absences, the 9th Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa will be an opportunity to celebrate Francophone diversity and to highlight the sporting and artistic talents of the participating countries. We wish this event a great success and hope that it will help strengthen ties within the Francophonie
