Hot news: Tensions between the DRC and Rwanda in Nyiragongo territory
A major escalation of violence erupted this Thursday morning in the territory of Nyiragongo, on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. The armies of the two countries engaged in heavy exchanges of fire, exacerbating the tensions that have persisted for several months.
According to the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), a column of the Rwandan army crossed terminals 13 and 17 to bring reinforcements to eastern DRC. Congolese forces responded by repelling this incursion, resulting in one Rwandan soldier killed in the clashes.
In response to these accusations, the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF) defend themselves by claiming that they are falsely accused of carrying out an incursion into Congolese territory. In a statement, they say the accusations are part of a disinformation strategy used by Congolese leaders to mask their internal failures in peacekeeping and security, while supporting armed groups, including the FDLR (Forces Liberation Democratic Forces of Rwanda).
Tensions between the DRC and Rwanda are recurrent and weaken relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, the security situation remains alarming in the eastern part of the DRC, with the M23 rebellion accused of committing massacres of civilians in several localities in North Kivu.
This new escalation of violence once again raises concerns about regional stability and highlights the challenges that the DRC faces in ensuring the security of its population in the east of the country. Effective measures and enhanced international cooperation are needed to resolve these conflicts and promote lasting peace in the region
