The Democratic Republic of Congo: a precarious security situation and controversial management, according to the political opposition

The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains worrying and raises concerns about the inability of the Congolese government to guarantee the safety of people and their property in several provinces of the country. Criticism is coming from all sides, especially from the political opposition, which castigates the security policy put in place by the authorities.

The Front Commun pour le Congo (FCC), an opposition platform led by former President Joseph Kabila, spoke on this subject in a statement sent to POLITICO.CD. The FCC severely criticizes the management of the security situation by the government, deploring in particular the instrumentalization of the judiciary and the chaotic management of the country marked by tribalism, corruption and illicit enrichment.

The FCC is particularly alarmed by the presence of foreign forces in certain regions of the DRC and accuses the government of having abandoned part of the country to them. The deployment of contingents from the regional force of member countries of the East African Community in the territories of Rutshuru, Masisi and Nyiragongo, in the province of North Kivu, is particularly criticized.

The inter-ethnic conflict between the Teke-Yaka communities in the territory of Kwamouth, in Mai-ndombe, in the west of the country, is also a source of concern. The FCC points the finger at the manipulation of this conflict by certain politicians, string pullers from Kinshasa, for their mainly economic interests.

Despite these criticisms, the Congolese government recently extended for three months the mandate of the regional force of member countries of the East African Community, responsible for maintaining peace in certain regions of the DRC. This extension of the mandate comes in a context of mistrust between the government and this regional force and should be the subject of an assessment which will determine the fate of the military component of the East African organization on Congolese territory.

In this context, the FCC calls on the international community to be impartial in sanctioning the sponsors and executors of human rights violations in the DRC. This worrying situation is likely to persist while waiting for lasting solutions.
