Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge visited the villages of Nyamukubi and Bushushu in the province of South Kivu, to see the damage from the latest floods which claimed the lives of more than 500 people. It was accompanied by significant humanitarian aid including mattresses, kitchen utensils, bags of flour, corn, oil as well as food and non-food items for the victims. Addressing the inhabitants, he stressed that “all works should be suspended in memory of our compatriots”.

The Prime Minister also received several memoranda from the people of the region, asking them for a solution. Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge has promised to find a solution for the victims. This is the third assistance for these villages affected by the floods, however, the inhabitants denounce having never received the first two assistances.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister’s gesture is welcomed even if the victims are waiting to see the impact of this aid really reach their homes. The authorities should strengthen their humanitarian response policy to ensure that aid reaches vulnerable people affected by natural disasters in time.
