“Insecurity in the DRC: A magistrate killed in an argument in Tshikapa, the authorities singled out”

The town of Tshikapa, capital of Kasai province, was the scene of intense tension on 27 May. Magistrate Kolomonyi of the Tshikapa Peace Court was killed in a diamond mine located 12 km north of the city.

According to information collected on the spot, an altercation broke out between the magistrate’s police officers and the artisanal miners of the mine. After an argument, a police officer accidentally shot the head of the prosecution.

The governor of the province confirmed the incident and promised an investigation to shed light on the circumstances of the magistrate’s death. Witnesses on the spot denounced the passivity of the police who did not intervene in time to calm the tensions. Some also pointed to the authorities’ lack of means to ensure the safety of the population.

This situation once again bears witness to the insecurity that reigns in this part of the country. The authorities must therefore take measures to guarantee the safety of citizens and reduce the level of crime in the region.

In the same week, the Democratic Republic of Congo modernized its legislation on public finances to improve management and attract investors. This could contribute positively to the security and stability of the country, as also underlined by Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde who is committed to resolving the humanitarian and security crisis in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri.

In summary, the situation of insecurity in certain regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is worrying. The authorities must take measures to guarantee the security of citizens and the stability of the country. This modernization of public finance legislation could be an important step in the right direction
