The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing unprecedented political unrest, with the opposition demonstrating against President Félix Tshisekedi and his government, accused of repressing the fundamental rights and freedoms of its citizens. Former Prime Minister Bruno Tshibala condemned police repression during opposition demonstrations on May 20, while recalling the importance of freedom to demonstrate and democracy.
He also underlined the importance of the audit of the electoral register for the credibility and transparency of the electoral process, while criticizing the way in which it was carried out in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Bruno Tshibala also highlighted an important point by asking for the respect of the law of July 26, 2018 on the status of former elected Presidents of the Republic and fixing the advantages granted to the former heads of the constituted bodies which guarantees him advantages as former Prime Minister .
The situation continues to escalate in the country as opponents multiply actions to denounce insecurity, the high cost of living, the misery of the people and a chaotic electoral process. The international community is alerted to the dictatorial excesses of the regime in place. The authorities have not yet reacted and are leaving uncertainty about the organization of a next opposition demonstration in 17 days.
In Kwango province, the violence is fueled by groups like the Mobondo militia. The authorities are called upon to take drastic measures to guarantee security and peace in the country.
In short, the DRC is in a precarious situation where the upcoming elections risk exacerbating the tensions already palpable in the country. The international community must play a mediating role to prevent the situation from degenerating further and guarantee transparent and free elections for the Congolese people.
