“Controversy around the strike of freight transporters in the former Orientale province”

The strike by freight transporters and vehicle owners on the axes leading to the former Orientale province continues to arouse great controversy. While the agencies are talking about a strike, the carriers’ platform is reporting a mourning that should last until Wednesday.

On the second day of this strike, travel agencies leading to the former Orientale province were systematically closed. The drivers and handlers, worried, asked their hierarchy to authorize the trip.

On the other side, the owners of vehicles and goods ensure that it is a three-day mourning and not a one-month strike. According to Kashile, from the PLATRACO carrier platform, the question of the strike has not yet been decided and everything will be known on Wednesday. The platform calls in particular for the rehabilitation of roads as well as safety on the axes frequented.

The suspension of transport on the axes leading to the former Orientale province (Ituri, Haut and Bas-Uele as well as Tshopo) was decided during the General Assembly of owners of vehicles and goods on Friday, May 26. This measure, however, is not unanimous among their agents who, according to them, “live at the rate of the day”.

Divergent statements from stakeholders make it difficult to accurately understand this situation. Let’s hope that the ongoing exchanges quickly lead to a satisfactory solution for all.
