“North Kivu province: new wave of violence with beheadings of civilians”

The province of North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is in the grip of a new wave of violence. On the night of Thursday May 26 to Friday May 27, at least four civilians were beheaded in the village of Manzembe, locality of Kilya, in the Ruwenzori sector. The attackers targeted farmers who were camping in their fields.

According to Kambale Kalwana, president of the civil society of Kilya, the attack began at 10 p.m. local time, and was carried out by the alleged ADF combatants. The bodies of the victims were found the following day, among them a beheaded mother with her nine-month-old infant, spared by the rebels.

This act is the latest in a series of attacks recorded in this locality of the province of North Kivu. Several villages have been emptied of their inhabitants, following the repetition of violence.

It is important to recall that the security situation remains very tense in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with armed groups spreading terror in the region. The civilian population is the first victim of this violence, which has lasted far too long. Measures must be taken to protect citizens and bring peace to this region
