DRC: Political oppression and violation of fundamental rights, Moïse Katumbi denounces an alarming situation

In the DRC, the political situation continues to deteriorate as opponents suffer more and more constraints and violations of fundamental rights. On Friday May 26, Augustin Matata Ponyo, former Prime Minister, was prevented from holding a conference in Kenge and from staying in the territory of Kikwit in the former greater Bandundu. Moïse Katumbi, the president of Together for the Republic, supported the victim by denouncing the tyranny that is befalling the DRC.

In a tweet published the same day on his account, Moïse Katumbi expressed his solidarity with Matata Ponyo by criticizing the repression of the current power in Kinshasa which forces opponents to circulate freely in their own country and prevents them from carrying out political activities. For the president of Together for the Republic, the country is sinking into oppression and tyranny. However, he affirms that the Congolese people, if they remain united, will be able to get out of this crisis.

This escalation of political tension in the DRC is fueling many concerns among international observers. Opponents denounce above all the numerous violations of the freedom to demonstrate and move more and more frequently. The situation also worries the Congolese people who are suffering the effects of this endless political crisis.

It is time for the government to take concrete measures to guarantee the security of Congolese citizens and respect the fundamental rights of all political actors. Freedom of expression and demonstration are key elements to guarantee a healthy democracy and to develop the country. Hopefully things will soon improve for the DRC and peace and stability will return to the country.
