“Solar electrification transforms the lives of the inhabitants of Walikale, a major advance in North Kivu”

Echoes of economy of July 21, 2023: Significant progress in the electrification of Walikale

In North Kivu, the city of Walikale is finally experiencing major progress in terms of electricity. More than 250 families have been connected to an electricity network thanks to the electrification project launched by the Nduma Kasha company. This ambitious project, initiated by the former Minister of Hydrocarbons, Rubens Mikindo, was welcomed by the population of Walikale who sees in this initiative a real catalyst for development for this landlocked region.

The installation of a solar power plant has brought electricity to this part of North Kivu which until now had been deprived of this essential service. The benefits of electrification are already being felt, with improved living conditions for residents who can now access lighting, appliances and services such as mobile phone charging.

This solar electrification project also contributes to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative. Indeed, the use of solar energy makes it possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development.

MP Olive Mudekereza, meanwhile, stresses the importance of investment in agricultural production and processing as a long-term solution to avoid fluctuations in the foreign exchange market. By focusing on the agricultural sector, it is possible to stimulate economic growth, create sustainable jobs and promote food self-sufficiency.

In the same perspective of development, Caritas Butembo-Beni is conducting an awareness campaign on the use of biofertilizers. This initiative aims to improve agricultural production and deal with predatory insects that can harm crops. By encouraging the use of environmentally friendly methods, Caritas contributes to the preservation of natural resources and the sustainability of agriculture.

However, some issues still hamper economic development in some regions. The local Federation of Companies of Congo (FEC) deplores the multiplicity of taxes imposed on some of its members as well as on drivers of vehicles on the Aru-Haut Uele road section. This situation slows down economic activity and makes it more difficult for local businesses to access markets.

In conclusion, the electrification of Walikale represents a major step forward in the development of North Kivu. Thanks to solar energy, more than 250 families can now benefit from electricity, which improves their living conditions and promotes the economic development of the region.. However, other challenges persist, such as the need to invest in agriculture and to resolve issues related to taxes and market access
