The efforts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are increasingly visible, particularly in the water, electrification and industrialization sectors. According to the Minister of State in charge of Planning, Judith Suminwa Tuluka, the Congolese government has accelerated reforms and actions to provide Congolese with clean water free of contamination.
In the water sector, the government has implemented measures to decentralize and liberalize services, with the creation of a Water Sector Regulatory Authority. Local and independent water boards are also being implemented. In addition, a national water policy has been developed to guarantee access to quality water for all Congolese.
With regard to electrification, the DRC is committed to drastically increasing access to energy. The implementation of the electricity law liberalizing the sector has enabled significant progress, with the creation of the Electricity Regulatory Authority and the National Agency for Electrification and Energy Services in rural and peri-urban areas. Currently, the private sector represents 13% of the overall electricity supply in the DRC.
However, despite these advances, challenges persist, particularly in the industrial sector. Industry, especially mining, is the main consumer of electricity in the DRC, but the supply is still insufficient. The quality of electricity and frequent outages pose significant problems for industries and services dependent on electricity.
The DRC remains open to partnerships and exchanges of experience with friendly countries to continue to progress in achieving the SDGs. Efforts in the water, electrification and industrialization sectors are essential to ensure sustainable development and improve the quality of life of the Congolese.
