Medical care in Kanyaruchinya: an example of resilience in the face of adversity
Over the past year, the Kanyaruchinya health center, supported by the organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), has faced many challenges in providing essential medical care to the population of the region. Located in the territory of Nyiragongo, north of Goma, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this center has recorded an impressive number of consultations, thus testifying to the impact of the armed conflict and humanitarian crises on the health of the inhabitants.
According to a recent MSF report, no less than 82,229 consultations were recorded between July 2022 and June 2023. These consultations cover a wide range of illnesses, from malaria to scabies, diarrhea and respiratory infections. The health center also had to deal with emergency situations, such as caring for victims of sexual violence, pregnant women and road accident victims.
The massive arrival of new displaced families at the end of October amplified the need for medical care, resulting in a significant increase in the number of daily consultations, from 80 to 240. MSF had to adapt its services to meet this increased demand and ensure adequate patient care.
In addition, the health center has also had to deal with epidemics, including an outbreak of cholera and an outbreak of measles. As part of the fight against measles, no less than 108,949 children aged 6 months to 9 years have been vaccinated, thus helping to contain the spread of the disease.
Despite the efforts of medical teams and humanitarian organizations, the situation remains worrying in Kanyaruchinya. According to the most recent United Nations estimates, approximately 210,000 people live in this health zone, in precarious living conditions and often considered “unworthy”.
It is essential to highlight the courage and resilience of the MSF teams and local health personnel who are working tirelessly to provide life-saving medical care to a population facing multiple difficulties. Their dedication and commitment are inspiring examples of humanity’s ability to deal with adversity.
However, it is also crucial to emphasize that these recurring health crises in the Kanyaruchinya region require a comprehensive and sustained response. It is necessary to strengthen local health systems, improve access to care for all and promote disease prevention. By investing in the health of communities affected by conflict, we can help rebuild lives and promote a better future for all.
