Humanitarian Challenges in North Kivu: Thousands of Displaced People Awaiting Assistance
In the territory of Rutshuru, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the humanitarian situation has become critical for thousands of displaced people fleeing clashes between M23 rebels and fighters called Wazalendo. About thirty thousand new people were forced to leave their homes to escape the violence and found themselves without any humanitarian assistance.
These displaced persons, including women, children and even schoolchildren, came mainly from the villages of Bukombo, Bishusha and the locality of Kipfulo. They found refuge in areas such as Tongo, Lushovu, Kabizo and Bambo, as well as in the Kihondo and Mutanda groupements towards Nyanzale.
Unfortunately, many displaced families find themselves in precarious and desperate living conditions. According to Philémon Munyakazi, head of the NGO Action for Social Integration, these displaced people face a serious food shortage and live without any humanitarian assistance. In addition, the promiscuity in which they live makes it difficult to respect hygiene rules, which exposes these people to multiple health risks.
Faced with this alarming situation, Philémon Munyakazi launches an urgent appeal to the Congolese government as well as to humanitarian organizations to provide emergency assistance to these displaced persons. He insists that among them are children who are deprived of their fundamental right to education. He also asks for help for host families who find themselves without resources to meet the needs of these displaced persons.
Clashes between M23 and Wazalendo fighters have exacerbated the suffering of populations in the Bukombo groupement. Violence and insecurity continue to plague this region, leaving thousands of people vulnerable and without any prospect of improving their situation.
It is therefore essential that the Congolese government step up its efforts to guarantee the safety of civilian populations and provide appropriate humanitarian assistance to those in need. In addition, it is essential that humanitarian organizations and the international community mobilize to support these displaced persons and help alleviate their suffering.
In conclusion, it is imperative that immediate measures be taken to meet the urgent needs of these displaced persons in Rutshuru territory. The humanitarian situation in North Kivu requires prompt attention and action in order to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe. Together, we can provide vital support to these vulnerable populations and help them rebuild their lives in dignity and safety
