Lay Catholics in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are expressing concern over the ongoing crisis in the country. Gathered within the Lay Coordinating Committee (CLC), the Catholic faithful believe that an in-depth dialogue is the only way out for the nation. In a message addressed to President Félix Tshisekedi, they call on the main political and social leaders of the country to work together to find urgent and adequate solutions to the problems that arise.
The CLC stresses that the internal division in the DRC represents an obstacle to victory against the internal and external enemies of the country. They also highlight the economic precariousness and the increase in the cost of living, which fuel a feeling of discouragement and distrust among the population. According to them, the Congolese people are vulnerable to rumors and manipulation because of this precarious situation.
With regard to electoral governance, Congolese Catholics share Cardinal Ambongo’s concerns. They stress the importance of resolving the internal difficulties linked to this area in order to avoid general disorder or an illegitimate seizure of power following the elections.
The CLC also recalls that the security situation in the DRC is worrying, with kidnappings and thefts of children which arouse fear within the population. The assassination of MP Chérubin Okende is cited as an example of the violence that reigns in the country, affecting even political representatives.
Faced with these challenges, the CLC urges the Congolese population to remember the appeal of Pope Francis during his visit to the DRC at the beginning of the year: “Courage, Congolese brother and sister, get up! Take back in your hands, like a very pure diamond, what you are: your dignity, your vocation to keep in harmony and peace the house you live in!”.
The CLC remains vigilant and attentive to the evolution of the situation and positions itself in the front line to defend the interests of the population in the event of a persistent crisis. They call for a national rally and a return to solidarity to face the challenges that arise.
It is time for political and social leaders in the DRC to realize the urgency of the situation and work together to find solutions. Dialogue and solidarity are essential to get the country out of this crisis and guarantee a better future for all Congolese.
In conclusion, the CLC stresses the importance of dialogue and national unity to overcome the challenges facing the DRC
