Communiqué of the caucus of Sankuru deputies condemning the assassination of MP Chérubin Okende

The caucus of national deputies of Sankuru reacted strongly following the assassination of deputy Chérubin Okende. In an official statement, Caucus Chairman Emery Okunji expressed his strong condemnation of this heinous act and demanded a serious investigation to bring justice.

This Thursday, July 13, the body of MP Chérubin Okende was found in his car, a Jeep Lexus registered 8953AF/19, in front of the Kinshasa garage. This tragedy plunged the province of Sankuru into mourning and aroused a wave of indignation within the Congolese political class.

Chérubin Okende was a former transport minister and a respected national deputy, as well as a spokesperson for Moïse Katumbi’s party. His assassination raises many questions about the safety of politicians and the political situation in the country ahead of the presidential elections in December.

In the statement, the Sankuru MP Caucus calls on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation to identify the culprits and bring them to justice. They insist on the importance of shedding light on this heinous act in order to put an end to the impunity that is rampant in the country.

This tragic event comes on top of a series of attacks and arrests targeting political opponents in the DRC. The climate of terror that reigns in the capital and in certain cities of the country threatens democracy and weakens institutions.

The Sankuru MP Caucus is also calling for enhanced security measures to ensure the protection of citizens and politicians. They express their solidarity with the family and loved ones of Chérubin Okende, as well as with all the Congolese people who are in mourning.

In conclusion, this tragic assassination once again reminds us of the need to establish a climate of security and justice in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The authorities are now called upon to act quickly and effectively to resolve this investigation and ensure that such acts do not happen again in the future. The country’s democracy and stability depend on it.
