The National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) recently announced a seven-day extension of the deadline for submitting nominations for national deputies for the legislative elections. This decision follows the difficulties encountered in the process of submitting applications.
The CENI pointed out that some Application Reception and Processing Offices did not register all application files, citing problems with logistics, communication and the transmission of proof of payment of application fees. In order to remedy this situation, the electoral body authorized independent candidates, political parties and political groupings to send electronically the necessary forms to their representatives at the level of each electoral district.
The compliant certification of academic titles has been relaxed, allowing the use of a certificate justifying five years’ professional experience in the absence of certification. In addition, specific conditions have been recalled for civil servants, public administration agents, magistrates, members of the armed forces and the Congolese national police who wish to present themselves.
The CENI also informed that the additions, withdrawals or substitutions of files of national deputies candidates will take place later, as well as the publication of the provisional lists of candidates and the filing of appeals challenging the lists of candidates.
Despite these adjustments, the CENI reaffirmed its desire to organize the legislative, provincial, municipal and presidential elections in accordance with the constitutional deadlines set in its electoral calendar.
This extension of the deadline for submitting candidacies to the national legislative elections offers a new opportunity for participants to finalize and submit their files. Despite the challenges faced, the CENI remains committed to ensuring transparent and democratic elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
