“Murder of a political opponent in the DRC: the National Episcopal Conference of Congo demands justice and security for all”

In the political turmoil that is shaking the Democratic Republic of Congo, a new tragic event has aroused great indignation: the murder of Chérubin Okende, a political opponent. In an already tense pre-election context, this assassination was described as “ignominious and heinous” by the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO).

CENCO, representing the voice of the Catholic Church, expresses its deep concern over this “intolerable and inadmissible” crime. According to the bishops, this murder risks exacerbating the political tensions already present in the run-up to the general elections. They also point out that this violent act echoes the arrests of members of the political group of Chérubin Okende, as well as a series of verbal and physical violence perpetrated by political fanatics, which have gone unpunished until now.

CENCO appeals to the Congolese authorities to shed light on this heinous crime and for justice to be done. For the bishops, it is essential that those responsible for this criminal act be identified and brought to justice in order to establish a climate of security and national cohesion.

Faced with this tragedy, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) expresses its most sincere condolences to the biological and political family of Chérubin Okende. She assures the family of prayers and hopes that God will grant Cherubin Okende eternal rest in his Kingdom.

This tragic event highlights the urgency of national unity in the face of rising hate speech and acts of violence. CENCO calls for the preservation of the Republic and the restoration of national cohesion to guarantee the security of citizens and ensure a climate conducive to democratic elections.

It is essential to strongly condemn such acts of political violence and to prosecute those responsible in order to restore confidence and stability in the country. The Democratic Republic of Congo must move towards a better future, where the rights of every citizen are respected and protected.

This sad news is a reminder of the importance of peace, justice and solidarity to build a democratic and prosperous society. Hope lies in collective action and resistance against violence and injustice. As citizens, we must remain vigilant and united in our quest for a better Congo.

The memory of Chérubin Okende will remain etched in our minds, reminding everyone of the importance of protecting democracy and acting for a just and peaceful future. May his ideals continue to inspire future generations and guide the nation towards a brighter future
