News: M23 rebels continue attacks in Rutshuru territory
In a series of attacks on Friday July 14, M23 rebels have once again sown terror in the chiefdom of Bwito, located in the territory of Rutshuru, in the province of North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. . The haphazard shooting caused the death of two women in the Rushashe IDP camp.
According to Isaac Kibira, deputy delegate official of the governor in the chiefdom of Bwito, the rebels hid in the bush near the village of Makomalehe and threw bombs which reached the camp of the displaced. Unfortunately, the shrapnel hit a six-year-old girl and an older mother. The little girl lost her life on the spot, while the mother was transported to Kabizo hospital where she unfortunately died.
The consequences of these attacks could be even more tragic, since many populations live in this area and could also be affected by the shootings. Unfortunately, human rights defenders who could have helped monitor the situation have already fled the area, making monitoring and protecting civilians more difficult.
The army has not yet communicated about these attacks, but it is clear that the M23 continues to reinforce its troops and ammunition in several localities in the territories of Nyiragongo, Rutshuru and Masisi, with the aim of seizing new agglomerations.
These attacks come despite a high-level meeting held this week in Goma, in the presence of Uhuru Kenyatta, facilitator of the East African Community (EAC) in the security crisis in the east of the country. This meeting aimed to discuss the pre-cantonment of the M23 rebels, in the hope of finding a peaceful and lasting solution to the situation.
However, it is clear that additional efforts must be made to put an end to these violent attacks against civilians. The local population has lived in fear and insecurity for far too long, and it is time for concrete measures to be taken to ensure their protection and restore peace to the region.
