“Incendiary speeches in politics: a threat to democracy – How to preserve our Republic in times of political tension?”

Article: Incendiary Speeches in Politics: A Threat to Democracy

In a period marked by rising political tensions and growing insecurity, our country is facing a real precipice. Institutions are weakened, national cohesion is undermined, and it is the Republic itself that is in danger.

At the heart of this national malaise, we must point the finger at the inflammatory and irresponsible speeches made by certain political leaders and their supporters. They do not hesitate to spread hatred, insults and violent threats to impose a single and oppressive thought, in the hope of eliminating any dissenting opinion. And unfortunately, the forces responsible for maintaining public order often seem to remain silent in the face of these abuses. This unacceptable tolerance gives the impression that there is impunity granted to those who claim to be partisans, including within the institutions supposed to guarantee respect for the law and the republican order.

In this tense environment, where the law of the strongest reigns and where terror sets in, tragic events occur. Political figures are kidnapped, lives are shattered, and it brings shame on our institutions and causes fear throughout the Nation. The recent example of the kidnapping and murder of Cherubin Okende, a former minister and deputy, is a tragedy that must prompt us to react. Some were ironic at the news of his abduction, and the security services may not have reacted quickly enough to the call for help from his family and loved ones. This new flaw in our system is worrying. We must ask ourselves: Who benefits from this heinous crime? What are the motives of the killers? It is up to the investigators to answer these questions, because a man died in circumstances that remain to be elucidated.

Beyond the emotion aroused by this tragedy, it is time for the Nation to come together and stand up against these incendiary and anti-republican speeches which undermine our social foundations in the name of self-interest and power. Faced with these hours of danger, where insecurity is spreading in our neighborhoods, reaching even the most protected environments, we must demonstrate responsibility.

We cannot leave our country at the mercy of the hordes who seek to sow chaos through our indifference and our selfish ambitions. The gravity of the situation must inspire all those responsible at all levels to adopt an attitude of dignity and moderation. Beyond political struggles and differences of opinion, we must put the sense of national unity and moderation above all else.

In this chaos marked by political intolerance, where no one is safe, I appeal to the President of the Republic. He is the only one, by virtue of his constitutional oath, to have the responsibility of guaranteeing national cohesion (article 74 of the Constitution). It must become aware of its crucial role in these troubled times and assume its responsibilities to ease tensions, dispel misunderstandings and bring the Nation together. Any other behavior would be negligence towards a Nation in danger.

In conclusion, we must stand up against inflammatory rhetoric in politics. They represent a threat to our democracy and to the stability of our country. It is time to put aside our personal interests and focus on the general interest
