Denis Mukwege calls for the mobilization of living forces to save the nation in danger
Dr. Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize 2018, has launched an urgent appeal to all the living forces of the Congolese nation to mobilize and save the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the face of an increasingly critical situation. This appeal comes following the kidnapping followed by the assassination of the opponent Chérubin Okende, a crime that the famous Congolese activist describes as a “villainous crime”.
Denis Mukwege strongly condemns this heinous act and calls for the opening of an independent investigation in order to shed light on this assassination and bring justice to Chérubin Okende. It also urges citizens’ movements, associations, professional organizations, religious denominations and political parties to come together urgently to find a strong and lasting common response to these human rights violations and to defend democracy and peace in the DRC.
Doctor Mukwege underlines that this assassination occurs at a critical time, with the approach of the general elections, in a context of repression of the political opposition and restriction of freedoms. He therefore calls for a real mobilization to save the Congolese nation in danger.
At the same time, Prime Minister Sama Lukonde also undertakes to shed full light on this crime and affirms that the government will not tolerate such acts, which go against the principles of the Republic defended by the head of the state.
This urgent appeal by Denis Mukwege highlights the seriousness of the situation in the DRC and the need for collective action to safeguard democracy, human rights and peace in the country. The next few days will be crucial for the future of the Congolese nation, and it is essential that all active forces mobilize to face this major challenge
