Congolese genocide: remembering to act better
Every year on August 2, the world comes together to commemorate the Congolese Genocide and to raise awareness of its profound impact in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Genocost event is an opportunity to reflect, learn and show our solidarity with the Congolese people. Whether you are physically present in Paris, Goma or Kinshasa, or participate online, your voice matters.
This year, the theme of Genocost is “The Cost of Genocide”. This theme highlights the devastating consequences that the Congolese people have suffered: economic losses, human lives sacrificed, communities shattered and lingering trauma for survivors. It aims to remind the importance of understanding these consequences and to inspire concrete actions for a better future for the Congolese people.
During this day of commemoration, many activities will be organized. An exclusive interview will be broadcast live, featuring three mining industry experts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They will share their in-depth knowledge of the far-reaching effects of the genocide, particularly in the context of the mining sector. This interview promises to be enriching and enlightening.
For those present in Paris, a physical gathering will take place at 10, rue des terres au curé, offering the opportunity to gather and participate in various activities in tribute to the victims and in support of the survivors. In Kinshasa, a side event will take place, providing a space for reflection and solidarity at the heart of the affected community.
Whether you participate in person or online, we invite you to join the Genocost movement. Share your thoughts, stories and support using the hashtags #Genocost #Genocost10 #Genocost2023 and #NeverForget. Together, let’s amplify the voices of those affected by the Congolese genocide and commit to building a better future.
