Assassination of Chérubin Okende: a tense political climate in the DRC

The murder of national deputy and opponent Chérubin Okende has sparked strong reactions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In an already tense pre-election context, the accusations are flying and the political climate is getting heavier.

Ferdinand Kambere, deputy permanent secretary of the People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (Pprd), strongly condemned this criminal act and denounced the power in place, accused of creating a climate of terror vis-à-vis opponents. According to him, the Tshisekedi regime seeks to sideline the opposition in order to be alone in the elections.

The death of Chérubin Okende, found dead in his vehicle on the heavyweight avenue in the commune of Gombe, raised many questions. According to some sources, he was abducted by armed men in front of the Constitutional Court building.

This tragedy comes on top of a series of events that highlight the fragility of the political climate in the DRC. The tensions between the power in place and the opposition are palpable, and the calls for justice and transparency are becoming more and more pressing.

In parallel, a debate rages around the national anthem of the DRC, “Debout Congolais”. Some question its meaning and its words, thus fueling the controversy. This controversy reflects the division within the country on many issues, including those related to national identity.

On the economic level, another subject is making headlines: the phenomenal growth of the RAWBANK bank in 2022. With a 39% increase in loans granted, the banking institution confirms its leading role in the economic development of the DRC.

Finally, the political scene sees the emergence of new actors, such as Honoré Mvula, who will represent Luiza in Kasai Central. This committed candidate wishes to bring a wind of change to this region by proposing innovative solutions for the challenges it faces.

Overall, the situation in the DRC remains complex and tense. The assassination of Chérubin Okende is a reminder of the urgency of finding solutions to restore a peaceful political climate and promote true democracy in the country. Calls for justice, transparency and respect for the rights of the opposition are increasing, in the hope of building a better future for the DRC and all its citizens
