The World Food Program (WFP) is deploying an innovative new strategy to help vulnerable populations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Faced with the food security crisis in the provinces of Ituri, North and South Kivu, the WFP is setting up cash and food distributions to meet the needs of displaced people and families of welcome.
This initiative aims to support the agricultural activities of communities affected by conflict and natural disasters. WFP plans to gradually increase the number of people benefiting from this assistance in the coming months, with the aim of reaching 1.7 million people by July.
The distribution of cash allows families to have more choice, autonomy and flexibility in the use of their assistance. However, the WFP emphasizes that market stability is a prerequisite for ensuring the effectiveness of this approach.
To determine areas of intervention, WFP conducts multi-sector analyses, taking into account the functionality and accessibility of markets, security and protection issues, and beneficiary preferences. So far, more than 63,600 people have been registered and some of them have already received cash to meet their food and emergency needs.
WFP is committed to providing lifesaving food and cash assistance to a total of 3.6 million people in the DRC. Throughout its action, the organization maintains a certain programmatic flexibility to adapt to the available resources and the preferences of the beneficiaries.
This new WFP strategy reflects its commitment to find innovative approaches to combat food insecurity and help vulnerable populations in the DRC. By combining cash and food distributions, the organization hopes to provide a more effective response to the urgent needs of people affected by conflict and disaster
