“Security crisis in eastern DRC: towards a resolution through a strengthened regional approach”

Title: How to solve the security crisis in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo?

Introduction :
The security situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been a real challenge for the Congolese government for many years. With more than 250 local and foreign armed groups present in the region, as well as repeated attacks by neighboring countries, it is becoming urgent to find solutions to bring peace and restore the authority of the State.

The impact of the strength of the East African Community:
The DRC government initially called on the military force of the East African Community (EAC) to combat insecurity in the east of the country. However, the effectiveness of this force has been questioned, causing discontent in Kinshasa. Suspicions of collusion between certain EAC contingents and the M23 rebels have even been raised. Despite this, the Congolese government has decided to renew its confidence in this regional force by extending its mandate.

A new approach with SADC:
Faced with the mixed results of the EAC force, the Congolese government turned to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to find a solution to the security crisis in the east of the country. At the Extraordinary Troika Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government, discussions were held regarding the deployment of SADC troops in the region. This future intervention is part of SADC’s duty to assist its members facing security problems.

Current discussions:
President Félix Tshisekedi explains that the discussions with the EAC have made it possible to establish new modalities and to dispel misunderstandings. The results of this collaboration will be observed until September, and according to these results, the measures to be taken will be redefined. At the same time, exchanges are also underway with the SADC to determine the conditions for the deployment of its troops in eastern DRC.

Conclusion :
Resolving the security crisis in eastern DRC is a major challenge for the Congolese government. Although the strength of the East African Community has shown its limits, the government remains committed to the process of finding solutions, whether with the EAC or with SADC. The main objective is to restore peace and stability in the region, while strengthening the authority of the Congolese state. The evolution of the negotiations and the actions undertaken in the coming months will be decisive for the future of eastern DRC
