Alarming situation in Kasaï: The resurgence of measles endangers the lives of children

The measles situation in Kasai: an alarming upsurge

Since the beginning of 2023, the Kasai Provincial Health Division has been sounding the alert to a resurgence of measles in the region. To date, more than 3,300 cases have been identified, unfortunately leading to the death of 132 people.

According to the head of the health information, communication and research office, this epidemic particularly affected the health zone of Luebo, with more than 700 cases, as well as the health zone of Mushenge. In the city of Tshikapa, the health zones of Kalonda-Ouest and Kanzala are the most affected, with already more than 30 deaths recorded. This situation is particularly worrying, because the majority of cases concern children under the age of 10, who had nevertheless been vaccinated.

Faced with this critical situation, measures are being taken to stem the spread of the disease, including strengthening routine vaccination. The head doctor of the Tshikapa health zone, Steve Mandala, insists on the importance of accompanying the children to the nearest health structures in order to benefit from adequate care.

A campaign against measles is also planned for the month of August in Kasai, with the aim of raising awareness and carrying out extensive vaccination. It is essential to remind parents of the importance of vaccination to protect their children and stop the spread of this potentially fatal disease.

In conclusion, the resurgence of measles in Kasai is an alarming situation that requires an urgent response. Health authorities are putting in place measures to contain the epidemic, but the participation and awareness of the population are essential to prevent the spread of the disease. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect children and ensure their health
