Organ trafficking in Kinshasa: myth or reality?
In recent weeks, the city of Kinshasa has been the scene of a series of kidnappings, sparking alarming rumors of organ trafficking. Faced with these allegations, the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention, Doctor Olen Obe Nzem Serge, wanted to clarify the situation. According to him, organ trafficking is a complex operation that requires specific expertise and infrastructure, which Kinshasa does not yet have.
In a joint briefing with the Ministers of the Interior and of Communication, Dr Serge affirmed that organ transplantation is an advanced technology which requires in-depth examinations and specific storage conditions. He stressed that Kinshasa has neither the expertise nor the technical platform necessary to carry out such operations. In addition, the removed organs have a limited lifespan, which makes it difficult to preserve and transport them.
The Minister of Interior, Security and Customary Affairs, Peter Kazadi, also denied the existence of cases of organ trafficking reported to the security services. He assured that the State would never be complicit in such crimes and invited potential victims to come forward so that they can investigate.
However, despite these official declarations, rumors persist and fuel growing concern among the population. Kidnappings are on the rise, and some accuse the alleged perpetrators of these crimes of organ trafficking. The security situation in Kinshasa has become worrying, especially with the approach of the general elections and the Games of La Francophonie.
To deal with this insecurity, the Kinshasa provincial government announced reinforced security measures, with mixed patrols and checkpoints. Several individuals suspected of being involved in the kidnappings were apprehended and brought before the courts.
