News in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to be marked by serious human rights violations. According to the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO), the number of human rights violations and abuses increased by 16% compared to the previous month, with a total of 418 documented cases.
Among these violations, the right to life is particularly affected, with 313 victims of extrajudicial and summary executions. The alarming figures reveal that 372 people were executed, including 210 men, 48 women and 14 children. This 23% increase compared to the previous month underlines the seriousness of the situation.
The UNJHRO also highlights the responsibility of state agents in 152 human rights violations, or 36% of the total. This figure shows an increase of 7% compared to the previous month. Armed groups are also responsible for 64% of human rights abuses, with a total of 266 documented cases, an increase of 23%.
In provinces affected by conflict, 75% of violations are attributable to armed groups. Among these violations, there are 87 cases of summary executions resulting in 247 victims. This increase compared to the previous month, when there were 230 victims, is alarming.
The UNJHRO also underlines its support for the Congolese authorities in the fight against impunity. Convictions have been pronounced against elements of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and leaders of armed groups for crimes against humanity and human rights violations.
These figures reveal an extremely worrying situation in the DRC, where human rights continue to be violated. It is essential that measures be taken to guarantee the protection of civilians and put an end to impunity for the perpetrators of these violations
