The Best Images of the Scrabble K. Fokam 2023 Tournament
The 2023 K. Fokam International Scrabble Tournament, which took place from July 2 to 8 in Kribi, Cameroon, was a real success. Organized by the Ligue Professionnelle de Scrabble Francophone, this event brought together players from eight African countries, including Cameroon, Benin, Ivory Coast, Niger, DRC, Chad, Gabon and Togo.
A total of forty-nine athletes participated in this fierce competition, among which were two Congolese. Ngumba Ibn, representative of the DRC, stood out by brilliantly winning the final against the Chadian player Iram Rilengar Maxime. Thanks to this victory, Ibn Ngumba became the African scrabble champion of one of the biggest competitions on the continent and in the world.
But Ngumba Ibn’s journey has not been easy. Due to a lack of financial resources, he and his companion embarked on a long bus journey from the DRC to Kribi, crossing the Congo River and covering more than 2,500 kilometers in two days. Their motivation and their pride in representing their country were the driving forces behind their determination.
This international Scrabble tournament, baptized “the K Fokam millionaires tournament”, was made possible thanks to the initiative of Daniel Essomba, a super gifted Scrabble player and member of the STC Club of Yaoundé. Its objective is to take Scrabble out of precariousness and allow players to live fully from their art. The K Fokam Millionaires Tournament is thus a turning point for Scrabble in general and players in particular. It marks the beginnings of professional scrabble in Africa, with Cameroon as the starting point.
The tournament was also marked by the presence of the emblematic sponsor, Géremi Njitap, the Grand 08 of the Cameroonian football team, who gave his support to this large-scale event.
