Barbara Kanam: an artist at the service of cultural promotion in the DRC

In the Congolese artistic landscape, Barbara Kanam is an emblematic figure. A talented songwriter, her atypical career and her commitment have earned her recognition both nationally and internationally. Thus, her recent appointment as Director General of the Cultural Promotion Fund (FPC) of the Democratic Republic of Congo is a new step in her career.

The FPC, created in 1987 under the name of “Fonds Mobutu Sese Seko”, is an organization responsible for financing national cultural and artistic activities in the DRC. Placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, it enjoys management autonomy. Barbara Kanam, as Director General, will be responsible for implementing the intervention methods defined by the 2012 ministerial decree.

With her experience and her multidisciplinary background, Barbara Kanam will certainly bring a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to cultural promotion in the DRC. A graduate in Economics, she also has a patent in Theology and a license in International Trade. His expertise and knowledge will enable him to effectively manage funding applications, review cultural and artistic projects and make informed decisions in collaboration with the FPC Appropriations Committee.

Beyond her professional skills, Barbara Kanam is also recognized for her commitment to climate action in the DRC. Indeed, she was elevated to the title of Goodwill Ambassador for the Promotion of Climate Actions by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This experience gives him a particular sensitivity to environmental issues and could find an echo in his actions within the FPC.

The appointment of Barbara Kanam as head of the Cultural Promotion Fund is therefore excellent news for the Congolese artistic sector. His expertise, his vision and his commitment will undoubtedly contribute to stimulating creation, supporting local artists and promoting the cultural wealth of the DRC.
