The K. Fokam 2023 International Scrabble Tournament which took place in Kribi, Cameroon has recently come to an end. This tournament, organized by the Ligue Professionnelle de Scrabble Francophone, attracted participants from eight African countries, including Cameroon, Benin, Ivory Coast, Niger, DRC, Chad, Gabon and Togo.
It was the Congolese Ngumba Ibn who won the title of African champion of this prestigious competition. He brilliantly dominated all phases of the competition, showing his talent and mastery of the game. In a thrilling final, he beat Chadian champion Iram Rilengar Maxime to clinch victory.
Ngumba Ibn’s journey has not been easy. Due to financial constraints, he and his companion had to make a long and harrowing journey by bus from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kribi, Cameroon. Despite these difficulties, their determination to proudly represent their country pushed them to overcome all obstacles.
This tournament, also known as the “K Fokam Millionaires Tournament”, was initiated by Daniel Essomba, nicknamed “Master Gitan”, a passionate Scrabble player. Its objective was to change the image of Scrabble in Cameroon and allow players to fully live their passion. Thanks to his dedication and the support of his organizing committee, this tournament was a success and made it possible to set up the foundations of professional Scrabble in Africa.
This victory for Ngumba Ibn highlights the talent and potential of African Scrabble players. It also demonstrates the importance of supporting and promoting such competitions, which promote mind games and encourage players to develop their skills.
