“The European Union supports the electoral process in the DRC and calls for free and transparent elections”

The European Union (EU) positions itself in favor of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its upcoming electoral process. In a recent statement, the EU declares its readiness to support the country and its people in their quest for competitive, peaceful, inclusive and transparent elections in December 2023.

Faced with the criticisms and concerns expressed by opposition political parties and civil society organisations, the EU recognizes the work carried out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and underlines the need to respond to them urgently. It thus invites the CENI and all stakeholders to work together to organize truly inclusive, free, transparent and peaceful elections, which are essential to consolidate democracy and stability in the DRC.

Freedom of expression, of the media, of assembly, of association and of movement are among the essential conditions for guaranteeing the integrity of the electoral process, stresses the EU. It also warns against excessive or disproportionate use of force in response to peaceful protests, as well as against arbitrary detention. Ensuring the security and free participation of all political actors is a priority.

Furthermore, the EU strongly calls on all Congolese political actors to expressly condemn hate speech and xenophobia at all levels, and to oppose any action or attitude aimed at denigrating an ethnic group, a minority or a community religious. It insists on the responsibility of the perpetrators of violence or incitement to violence.

Finally, the EU condemns any speech likely to fuel inter-ethnic violence and affirms that attempts at division based on ethnicity, religion, language, region or origin will not be tolerated.

This position of the European Union demonstrates its commitment to democracy and stability in the DRC. By supporting efforts for transparent and inclusive elections, the EU hopes to contribute to the consolidation of democracy in the country and the establishment of a climate of peace and respect for human rights
