Kanzoka Ngwatala – A tragic destiny that challenges Congolese society

This Wednesday, July 5, a tragic event shook the city of Beni in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kanzoka Ngwatala, commander of the sub-commissioner of the Congolese national police-Belgian city, shot himself twice in his own house. Unfortunately, he died on the spot.

According to initial information, Kanzoka Ngwatala would have locked himself in his living room, in the absence of his wife and children, before committing irreparable damage. The reasons which pushed this police commander to such an act remain unknown for the moment.

This tragedy highlights the difficulties and suffering faced by many Congolese police officers. Difficult working conditions, daily pressure, lack of means and resources are all factors that can contribute to significant psychological distress. It is essential that the authorities take these issues into account and put in place support and assistance measures for the police.

Beyond this sad story, this event should serve as a reminder to Congolese society as a whole. It is important to work on raising awareness and preventing mental disorders. The stigma around these issues must be challenged in order to allow individuals to seek help without fear of judgement. Mental health services also need to be strengthened to meet the needs of the population.

In tribute to Kanzoka Ngwatala, it is essential to continue efforts in favor of the recognition of psychological disorders and to put in place concrete actions to support those who need it, particularly within the police forces.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of Kanzoka Ngwatala. May this tragedy serve as a driving force for collective awareness and concrete actions in favor of mental health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
