The security and humanitarian situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has long been a source of serious concern. The armed attacks perpetrated by different groups and the alleged involvement of Rwanda have caused a major humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced and constant human rights violations.
DRC Deputy Prime Minister of Defence, Jean-Pierre Bemba, recently expressed his frustration with the inaction of the international community in the face of this situation. He denounced Rwanda’s involvement in the armed attacks and highlighted the devastating consequences of this crisis on the Congolese population, with mass rapes, forced displacements and hampered development.
According to statistical data, more than 6.1 million people have been displaced in the DRC, mainly due to armed attacks by terrorist groups of the March 23 Movement (M23) supported by the Rwandan Armed Forces. This humanitarian crisis has disastrous repercussions on the stability and development of the country.
Jean-Pierre Bemba praised the leadership of Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa in their joint efforts to resolve the issue of security and defense in the region. He stressed the importance of military cooperation between the DRC and South Africa to promote peace, security and development in their respective countries.
Despite the geopolitical challenges they face, cooperation between the DRC and South Africa in the military field is doing well, according to Jean-Pierre Bemba. However, he called on the international community to take concrete measures to end the crisis in the DRC and protect the civilian population.
It is essential that the situation in the DRC be taken seriously by the international community, in order to put an end to the violence and allow the economic and social recovery of the country. Cooperation between African countries and international support are essential to resolve this complex crisis and restore peace in the region.
