The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda: a complex diplomatic relationship
In a tense geopolitical context, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, recently made a surprising statement regarding diplomatic relations between his country and Rwanda. During a radio broadcast, the Head of State affirmed that the DRC would not break diplomatic ties with its Rwandan neighbor, despite the persistent tensions.
According to President Tshisekedi, the existing problems are not with the Rwandan people, but rather with the regime led by Paul Kagame. He pointed to the presence of numerous intermarriages between the two peoples, proof according to him that the bilateral relationship cannot simply be broken overnight.
This position on diplomatic relations between the two countries is part of a broader vision of President Tshisekedi, who stresses the importance of maintaining dialogue and communication, even with countries with which tensions exist. He also cited the example of Russia and Ukraine, which, despite their conflict, maintain diplomatic relations.
Concerning the environment, the president announced that the DRC will welcome next month the presidents of Brazil and Indonesia, two countries renowned for their forest resources. This meeting aims to strengthen international collaboration for the preservation of the world’s forest lungs.
President Tshisekedi also addressed the criticism leveled at him, particularly in the run-up to elections. He refuted the accusations of dictatorship, pointing out that he hates dictatorship and will never be a dictator. According to him, his greatest joy since he came to power is the establishment of free education, a measure that contributes to the development of the country.
The Head of State concluded by emphasizing the importance of education for the development of Congo, saying that only Congolese can build and develop their country. He called for continued efforts to provide quality education to all children in the country.
This statement by President Tshisekedi highlights the complexity of relations between the DRC and Rwanda, while stressing the importance of dialogue and cooperation to resolve differences. In a regional context marked by political and security tensions, it is essential to foster constructive diplomatic relations to promote peace and development in the region
